Big Darby and Mill Creek began here, making for a natural watershed which was very important to the early settler. Not in existence until 1816, Logan was then Champaign County. It is one of the oldest in current Logan County. Zane Township was organized in 1818, and was named for Isaac Zane, a pioneer settler. Vacancies in the fiscal officership or on the board of trustees are filled by the remaining trustees. There is also an elected township fiscal officer, who serves a four-year term beginning on April 1 of the year after the election, which is held in November of the year before the presidential election. Two are elected in the year after the presidential election and one is elected in the year before it. The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees, who are elected in November of odd-numbered years to a four-year term beginning on the following January 1.
The 2010 census found 1140 people in the township. No municipalities are located in Zane Township, although the unincorporated community of Middleburg lies in the township's northwest. Zane Township is one of the seventeen townships of Logan County, Ohio, United States.
